What is Stevia?

Stevia is a natural sugar substitute derived from the leaves of Stevia Rebaudiana plant, a native of South America. Since ancient times Stevia is used for medicinal purposes but after its discovery as a sweetener it has been used in place of sugar. Hoi polloi often buy extract of the plant in liquid or powdered form instead of the leaves itself. Stevia is calorie free and is many times sweeter than sugar, while some studies even prove its health benefits.

Some of the health benefits of Stevia are:

  • Lower sugar level in blood: Stevia contains in it steviol glycoside, which does not breaks down in body. This controls insulin level in blood and promotes good health to pancreas. This helps in drastically lowering the sugar level.
  • Controls blood pressure: People suffering from hypertension can be saved from rise in blood pressure by the use of Stevia.
  • Fights acne and dandruff: If the extracts of Stevia are mixed with shampoo and if leaves of Stevia plant are made into a paste and applied on face, it helps in fighting dandruff and acne. Stevia’s anti bacterial and anti inflammatory properties help in its success.
  • Makes skin tighter and wrinkle free
  • Protects teeth and gum: Stevia prevents from cavities or plaque due to the presence of anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Helps in weight loss: Due to the absence of calories in Stevia even if it is added to our daily diet like with cereal it does not cause much harm and helps in reducing weight too.

Not only as a substitute to sugar, Stevia is good but the above and various other benefits are also attached with its consumption. Apart from Stevia there are many other substitutes to sugar, another is Honey. Honey is rich in nutrients, vitamins and minerals thus having various benefits.
