Swelling in gums is a very common problem these days. Our gums are basically fibrous and full of blood vessels. So, when swelling happens, the gums bulge out and thus, appear red.

Owing to this, the gums become painful, sensitive and irritated. They may also bleed when you brush your teeth.

There are several factors leading to swelling in gums. Some of them include gingivitis, nutritional deficiency, infection, pregnancy, poorly fitted dentures, excessive smoking, sensitivity to toothpaste or mouthwash and incorrect brushing and flossing techniques.

Therefore, maintaining a good oral is quite essential to keep gums healthy. We bring to you a few remedies that will help in reducing the swelling of gums.

  1. Turmeric

Turmeric is an excellent remedy to heal swollen gums. It has a compound called curcumin, which possesses both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This further helps in easing pain and reducing swelling and inflammation. In also prevents the bacteria from spreading any further.

Just take one-fourth teaspoon of turmeric powder in some water to form a thick paste. Apply this paste on your swollen gums using your finger. Let it sit for five minutes and then, massage for a minute. Rinse your mouth well with lukewarm water. Do it at least two times in a day till the selling goes away completely.

  1. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is another great remedy to heal swollen and bleeding gums. This superb herb contains anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, which further prevent growth of plaque and soothe inflamed gums.

Just scoop some fresh gel from an aloe leaf and then, apply it on your gums using young finger. Massage gently for a few minutes and then, rinse off with lukewarm water. Do it daily for best results.

  1. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil too is quite effective in treating swollen gums. This is because it contains antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties and thus, provides relief from inflamed and irritated gums.

Just add a few drops of tea tree oil in a glass of warm water. Now use this solution as a mouthwash two times in a day.

You can also use a toothpaste containing tea tree oil as an essential ingredient. Brush your paste with paste daily till the problem gets resolved. Make sure you use do not swallow this paste as it may lead to stomach problems.

  1. Vitamin D

Consumption of Vitamin D too is helpful in treating swollen gums. Vitamin D possesses anti-inflammatory properties, owing to which the swelling in gums gets reduced.

Vitamin D basically helps in absorption of calcium, which you consume through your daily diet. This way it boosts periodontal health and increases density of bone minerals.

To get a dose of vitamin D, expose yourself to sunlight early in the morning for about 15 minutes. Besides, consume foods rich in vitamin D, such as salmon, eggs, cod liver oil and sunflower seeds. Taking vitamin D supplements is another god option. But do consult your doctor before taking them.

  1. Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is definitely a superb and age-old remedy to treat dental problems, particularly swelling in gums. This Ayurvedic practice reduces the growth of bacteria in the mouth and thus, prevents all sorts of infection. This way it hinders the process of plaque formation and therefore, strengthens the gums.

Take one tablespoon of sesame oil and put it in your mouth. Swish this oil in your mouth for about 20 minutes. Afterwards, spit it out and then, rinse your mouth with lukewarm water. Then brush your teeth to finish the procedure. Follow this remedy daily. Also, make sure you do not swallow or gargle this solution.

  1. Warm and Cold Compresses

Warm and cold compresses can easily provide relief in case of swollen gums.

All you need to do is soak a piece of cloth in lukewarm water and squeeze out the excess liquid. Place the cloth against your face for five minutes.

Afterwards, take a pack of frozen vegetables in a thin towel and hold them in the same way as the warm cloth. Do it three times in a day for quick relief.
