Though natural treatments can be used without any side effects that come with antibiotics and are also inexpensive ways to deal with uncomfortable situations, it is advisable to consult your pediatrician before you use your own therapeutic methods to treat your ailing child.
Nasal congestions are the result of the tissues inside the nose swelling up and producing mucus. Stuffy nose in your baby may be due to viral illness such as cold and also due to other factors like dry air or irritants like cigarette smoke, dust or strong fragrance of perfumes. The chemical laden over-the-counter drugs are not the best alternative to treat your child and getting rid of stuffy nose in infants organically is the best recourse.
Breast Feed your Baby
Nursing your infant is the best protection that you can provide your baby. Keeping your baby hydrated is especially important during the time that he is sick. Breast milk contains antibodies which are specific to the environment of your baby and so breast-fed babies are less prone to infections than babies who are formula-fed. During nasal congestion, nurse your baby more to make sure that he is getting the proper feed. Your baby will need more feeds as his congestion might prevent him from taking the required intake.
During congestion, putting the baby on his back for too much time will lead to him being uncomfortable. Keep him upright as much as is possible. Sleeping upright will help the mucus to drain out. You can hold your baby against your chest to help him sleep upright. Carry the baby upright and also nurse him in that position. When in the crib, use a pillow to make the mattress inclined but only slightly and not too much as the baby might roll down.
Use a Humidifier
During winter when the air is dry, you need to take some extra measures to moisten the air, which will help to moisten the sensitive linings of your baby’s nose. A moist nasal passage eases congestion and helps in breathing. Add a humidifier and keep a pot of water simmering to add moisture in the air and get rid of the stuffy nose in your infant.
You can also try the steam treatment. Place a pot of steamy hot water on a table, drape a towel over you and your baby and breathe the steamy air with your baby. But one has to be careful not to overdo it as steam can burn.
Buy salt water (saline) and keep a ready stock at home to cure the stuffy nose of your infant and help relieve your baby from congestion. Lay your baby on his back and put 2 to 3 drops of saline into each nostril. Wait for a minute and drain your baby’s nose by turning him on his stomach. Saline drops work wonders for blocked noses.
The health benefits of coconut oil are numerous. Gently rub coconut oil around your baby’s nostrils. Coconut oil can also be rubbed onto your baby’s body for relief against congestion.
There are many essential oils which can be used during congestion to treat stuffy nose of your infant. But take care not to use essential oils directly on the baby; either put some essential oil in a room diffuser or put a few drops of any essential oil in water. Some of the essential oils which would help your baby are clove, eucalyptus, lemon, ginger, rosemary, sandalwood, cedar and thyme. Adding lavender would help the baby to relax.
Ajwain and Garlic Pouch
Put dry roasted garlic and ajwain in a kerchief and roll it into a pouch. Rub it frequently over your infant’s chest or under his feet. You can also hold it near your baby’s nose to relieve the congestion.
