Lesser Known Causes of Acidity

Suffered recently from horrible heartburn? Acidity is such a common issue you might imagine it would be simple to spot and treat. However, at times acidity symptoms can be less than obvious or easy to spot out and confused for something totally different. If left untreated, heartburn can soon be followed by Barrett’s esophagus, which is a step closer to cancer.
When it comes to acidity and prevention, there are a few foods to avoid:
- Chocolate is a great agitator and cause of acidity. Thanks to amounts of caffeine and stimulants such as theobromine, acidity is easily caused. Chocolate, being high fat and causing acidity, hence is a triple whammy and needs to be avoided.
- Soda along with other carbonated beverages are a few of the key causes of acidity. Carbonation’s bubbles expand inside the stomach while the increased pressure adds more to reflux. Even worse are sodas with caffeine and those which are acidic. Most leading colas were tested and found to be the most acidic. Experts suggest complete refraining to avoid acid reflux.
- Fried foods are the single most prominent and recognized cause of acidity. Heartburn is directly linked to fried foods which are chest pains from esophageal reflux. Deep-fried foods are especially to be avoided thanks to the high fat content.
- Alcoholic drinks such as wine and beer have been known to add to acidity. A range of alcoholic drinks are not at all acidic. Though, alcohol is believed to relax the valve at the bottom of the esophagus. This is responsible for the forming of reflux and acidity. Try your best to abstain from something. If not, try sticking to a glass of wine a day, have a single cocktail or stay away from acidic mixers such as soda.
- All high-fat foods are known for causing acidity. There is zero reason to believe one high fat or cheese is superior to the rest in such regard. If you suffer from acidity and an ongoing craving for cheese, you will need to make a choice soon enough. Compromise by using smaller portions as flavouring in foods but not as main ingredients. Low fat is much better than no fat.
