Knee pain is quite a common ailment that occurs due to usual wear and tear of a knee joint. It can happen to anyone, be it older adults, young adults and children. However, women are more prone than men to getting this ailment.


The specific location of the knee pain can vary from person to person. A knee pain can erupt in any pat including the knee joint, kneecap, ligaments and cartilage.

A pain in the knee rises due to several factors, such as weak bone structure, wear and tear due to aging, ligament injuries, fractures, meniscus injuries, stiffness in the joint due to arthritis and dislocation of the knee joint.

Besides pain, one can suffer from other symptoms like stiffness, swelling, numbness in the affected leg, redness and difficulty in walking and standing.

This knee pain surely needs medical attention but it can be treated through home remedies too. These remedies are helpful in treating mild to moderate pain. So let us take a look at a few of them.

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a remedy for several health ailments, including knee pain. This vinegar possesses alkalizing effect and therefore, helps in dissolving mineral build-ups and toxins present in the joint of the knee. Apple cider vinegar restores the joint lubricants and thus, reduces pain and promotes mobility.

All you need to do is add two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in about two cups of water. Stir well and sip this water at regular intervals throughout the day. Follow this remedy on a daily basis till the pain vanishes.

Besides, you can also add two cups of apple cider vinegar in your lukewarm bath water. Now take a bath with this water. Follow this remedy daily for at least a week.

Try another remedy by mixing one tablespoon each of apple cider vinegar and olive oil together. Massage the affected knee with this solution at last two times in a day. Do it daily for promising results.

  1. Ginger

Knee pain can erupt due to several ailments like arthritis, muscle strain and injury. Ginger is effective in alleviating this pain. This happens due to the presence of anti-inflammatory compounds in it. Ginger is also helpful in reducing swelling on the knee.

To use it, just crush a small piece of ginger root and add it to a cup of water. Let the water boil for about 10 minutes. Later strain the solution and then, stir in a teaspoon each of honey and lemon juice. Drink around three cups of this ginger tea regularly to ease knee pain.

Besides, ginger oil is also very effective. All you need to do is massage your knee with a few drops of ginger oil. Do it thrice a day till the pain gets reduced.

  1. Turmeric

Turmeric is known to be a universal healer and therefore, is quite effective in treating knee pain. This is because it contains a chemical called curcumin, which possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

As per the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), turmeric slows down the progression of rheumatoid arthritis, which is usually the main reason behind knee pain.

Take one and a half teaspoon each of ground ginger and turmeric in a cup of water. Now boil this solution for about 10 minutes. Later, strain it and stir in a teaspoon of honey in it. Consume this ginger and turmeric infused tea regularly.

Besides, you can also add a teaspoon of turmeric powder in a glass of lukewarm milk. Add a spoon of honey in this solution. Drink this milk before going to bed daily.

Another option is to consume 250 to 500 mg turmeric capsules thrice a day. However, do consult a doctor before taking these turmeric supplements.

  1. Lemon

Lemon is also helpful I reducing knee pain. To use it, just cut two lemons into small pieces. Now tie them in a cotton cloth and then dip them it in lukewarm sesame oil. Then place this cloth on the affected area for 10 minutes. Do it at least two times in a day.
